As of today (December 31), MTV’s last remaining 24-hour music channels around the world have gone dark.
The BBC reports that MTV’s UK music channels — including MTV Music, MTV 80s, MTV 90s, Club MTV, and MTV Live — signed off today, with local outlets confirming similar shutdowns in Australia, Poland, France, Brazil, and other regions. MTV’s flagship channel will remain on the air, though it will continue to prioritize non-music reality programming.
In a full-circle moment, MTV Music closed its broadcast by airing The Buggles’ “Video Killed the Radio Star,” the first music video ever played on MTV. The global shutdown comes as Paramount Skydance moves to cut costs across its portfolio following its merger earlier this year.
