Live Review: Japanese Breakfast Charms Crowd at Cat's Cradle, 7/26/2021

As live shows slowly start to return to North Carolina, eager fans awaited Japanese Breakfast's sold-out show at Cat's Cradle in Carrboro, NC. The masked-up crowd danced and raged along with opening band Mannequin Pussy, who left the crowd properly warmed up and ready to jam out.

Japanese Breakfast opened with an dynamic rendition of "Paprika," the opening track of Jubilee. Frontwoman Michelle Zauner bounced around on stage, looking ethereal and striking a gong highlighting each verse as an overjoyed crowd danced along with her. The beautifully hazy lighting added to the cathartic mood as she transitioned into "Be Sweet," an 80's-sounding jam that left the audience happily breathless as they sang along.

Cat's Cradle was bursting at the seams with energy and passion as the small venue was packed to the brim with fans in it's first full-capacity show since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. Japanese Breakfast's entrancing performance and Zauner's endearing vocals was the perfect way to welcome fans back to a new world of live music.

Jubilee was released in early June 2021, arriving just after the release of Zauner's book, Crying in H Mart. Listen to Jubilee below and view our full photo gallery here.
