South by Southwest to launch new festival SXSW Sydney in 2023

South by Southwest is launching a new festival in Australia in 2023 called SXSW Sydney.

The “futurist” festival is branching outside of the US for the first time since its inception in 1987. Now, SXSW Sydney is set to run from October 15th to 22nd. New South Wales tourism and major events agency Destination NSW announced that the festival will boast a whopping 1,000 events, screenings, and performances across Sydney.

The festival is set to “showcase the largest group of inspiring international thinkers, creators, innovators and performers ever seen in Sydney at one time,” SXSW Sydney managing director Colin Daniels explains. The festival will focus on artists working in the Asia-Pacific region.

The new festival is called “the official annual Asia-Pacific installment of SXSW.” SXSW interactive director Hugh h Forest says that the event would extend invitations to artists from Silicon Valley and Hollywood, according to Variety.

“We are thrilled to bring this legendary festival of gaming, music, screen, tech and innovation to Sydney in 2023,” SXSW Sydney event producer Geoff Jones says. He also called the festival “the Olympics of events for the creator industries.”

Lineup and keynote speakers will be announced in the next few months.

Australian Recording Industry Association chief executive Annabelle Herd calls SXSW Sydney “a real opportunity for Australia to lead the global discussion in future trends, innovation and the value of the creative economy.”
