Turnstile have never been interested in staying in one lane, and their latest detour proves it. For triple j’s long-running Like A Version series, the hardcore shape-shifters took on The Stone Roses’ hazy Madchester staple I Wanna Be Adored and stretched it into something unmistakably their own.

Frontman Brendan Yates didn’t overthink the pick: “We’ve done covers for years,” Yates says. “Typically, we’ve not recorded a lot of them, but we’ve done a lot of covers, different covers live, different bands. But this was a different experience ’cause we actually kind of got to actually lay it down in a studio. And it was cool. It felt good to kind of… especially when on tour and you’re playing your songs every night, to break from that and and play someone else’s.”

The result doesn’t chase nostalgia. It respects the source material’s slow-burn swagger while tightening the screws just enough to feel contemporary and restless. It’s less revival, more reanimation.

They paired the cover with their own Sunshower, a deliberate contrast. Yates described it as coming from the opposite end of the spectrum, a reminder of the band’s elastic range. Together, the performances underline what Turnstile do best: blur lines, honor their heroes, and make it all sound inevitable.
