Sufjan Stevens has shared two new versions of “Fourth of July.”

In celebration of his 47th birthday on July 1st and Independence Day on July 4th, Stevens has dropped two renditions of his 2015 Carrie & Lowell track, “Fourth of July.” The new recordings see Stevens leaning into his experimental production style. Lyrically, the track is a conversation between Stevens and his mother as she passes away due to cancer.

The “April Base Version” of “Fourth of July” was recorded at Justin Vernon’s famous studio just outside of Eau Claire in Wisconsin. The “Dumbo Version,” on the other hand, is much more raw and stripped back, and recorded in Brooklyn, New York.

Listen to the two reworked versions of “Fourth of July” below.
